Why the engine is different from the SL55

Discussion in '2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK 55 AMG' started by SL55 AMG, Aug 10, 2002.

1. This car is gr8, but why they filled it with the old 55 AMG engine?
i mean the new ///AMG 55 supercharged engine in the SL have 100 more hp, if they put it in this car, which is a hundred kg lighter ,it would be gr8.

The majority of the people who can afford to buy such cars dont care about details

3. Re: Why the engine is different from the SL55

Try to imagine how an SL 55 owner will feel if a 70k CLK55 acclerates faster, handles better, better power-to-weight ratio than their 100k plus machines.

First off, this sin't the old 5.5 l engine. The old engine had 349 hp, this has 367. And secondly, this is not a supercar like the SL55. This is a coupé and 367 hp are totally enough, maybe even too much. COmpare it with the M3's 343 hp.

If 367 Hp is enough didn't they fit it with the 32 amg engine? it's a 3.2 6 cylinder with 357 Hp, this one is an 8 cylinder 5.5 L, it consumes twice as much as the 32 model.. silly choice i think....

a V8 is more prestigeous !!!

the CLK would be much faster then the SL55 AMG if it had 500bhp
thats the main reason
i definitly would like to see such an engine on the CLK... If i had the money

and people that buy these cars (my dad) DO care about the details.
well my dad is an exception, he didn't even know how much BHP his car had

if it was me i woudn't buy the car because of its looks
i would pay attention to the look at little bit and the details way more

the details are the most important part of the car
well thats wat i think

Good point.

11. Re: Why the engine is different from the SL55

because nobody would buy the SL if it was slower than something half its price, you dont see a camaro ss killing a z06 do you?

12. Re: Why the engine is different from the SL55

If you really care that much about the power output spend a bit of extra cash and put an aftermarket supercharger into this thing. You could probably get even more than 100 extra horsepower.

This car is meant to be like an "entry level" AMG model. It is not designed to be as fast as the other AMG cars. It is a luxury coupe not a pure bred sportscar. The engine fits the purpose of the car and that's what really matters.

13. Re: Why the engine is different from the SL55

If you have a look under the hood of a CLK55 you will see why they didn't fit superchargers and give it 500 bhp - there ain't no room!
The CLK was designed around the smaller MB engines and they had to really cram the V8 into it. They chose the V8 to help differentiate the CLK from the C class, even though it is built on C Class underpinnings.
As a long term prospect it looks good - the same engine that produces 500bhp in the CL, E and SL is producing 367hp in the CLK which should therefore mean that it's understressed and will last a lifetime.

Switch of ESP and it will still light up the rear tyres at 50mph - more than enough horsepower and still giving 25mpg
