1963 Ferrari 250 P
During press conference in 1963, Ferrari released their first mid-engine prototype having a V12. This was the 250 P which was essentially a stretched 248SP to accommidate the longer engine.
At the front of the 250 P was the dry-sump oil resevior, oil cooler, and water radiator. Having these components upfront helped the car achieve a more even weight distrobution.
The 250 P race season started in 1963 at Sebring in which two examples took first and second place behind four other Ferraris. That same year victory was had at Le Mans by Scafiotti and Bandini driving a 250 P.
No doubt, the 250P started a legacy of mid-engine Ferrari cars. The 250P was the first really successful mid-engine Ferrari sportcar. Shortly after the 250 was refined through racing, a production version was released. This was the 250 LM which was the 250 P with a roof.
