Rubbin’ NASCAR!

It’s time to talk NASCAR. It usually is. NASCAR’s calendar is the longest in racing, so it has the shortest off-season, and by the time you read this, NASCAR will have started up again. NASCAR also has captured the largest fan base in America, the vast bulk of available American sponsorship dollars, and seemingly interminable American media exposure. All of this means it’s really hard to get away from NASCAR.

I did almost enjoy a NASCAR-free week over New Year’s. We vacationed on Kauai, where one languid day I experienced a sudden, joyous realization: I had not spotted a single sign of NASCAR. No billboards, no store banners, not one NASCAR driver’s totemic number on a back window.
