The 1953 Championship

There’s a general feeling that endurance racing is about to enter a new age. Porsche is back and Porsche tends to set the standard, and there have even been hints that Ferrari may return to Le Mans. The category has not looked so healthy for years, and that without F1-style gimmicks like exploding tires and double points for the last race.

Whatever happens, it will be a world away from the first World Sports Car Championship in 1953. No fewer than 15 marques scored points, a record, which is all the more remarkable when you consider that only a top-six overall finish counted.
