Ferrari’s Daytona SP3 represents one of the most exclusive expressions of the marque’s modern engineering philosophy, combining limited-production exclusivity with technology and design inspired by Ferrari’s legendary sports-prototype racers. Set to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s London auction on October 31, this 2022 example is particularly significant as a left-hand-drive development car built in June 2022 and subsequently retained by Ferrari. It has also attracted considerable attention through features in Top Gear, Motor Sport Magazine, Car and Driver, and Road & Track.
The Daytona SP3 was conceived as part of Ferrari’s Icona series, a program that reinterprets important elements of the marque’s competition history through technically advanced, highly collectible road cars. Its styling deliberately recalls the dramatic proportions of Ferrari’s 1960s prototype racers, with a cab-forward cockpit, pronounced front and rear haunches, sculpted bodywork, and distinctive aerodynamic surfaces. Rather than relying on conventional retro cues, Ferrari integrated those references into a contemporary carbon-fiber structure and an aggressively aerodynamic silhouette.
At its core is a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12 derived from Ferrari’s competition-engine lineage. Mounted longitudinally behind the cockpit, the engine develops approximately 829 horsepower and revs to 9,500 rpm, making it one of Ferrari’s most powerful naturally aspirated road-car engines. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while sophisticated electronic controls and lightweight construction help extract maximum performance from the high-revving powertrain.
The SP3’s engineering extends beyond its engine. Its carbon-fiber monocoque, advanced aerodynamic management, active electronic systems, and performance-focused chassis were developed to deliver both high-speed stability and the responsive handling expected from an ultra-limited Ferrari.
This particular car carries additional significance because of its development-car status and Ferrari provenance. As a factory-retained example that has been extensively documented and publicly tested, it offers collectors an unusually direct connection to the engineering process behind one of Ferrari’s most technically ambitious modern Icona models.
With production of the Daytona SP3 limited to just 599 examples for customers, this development car occupies an especially intriguing position within the model’s history. Its combination of factory provenance, extensive media exposure, prototype-development significance, and extraordinary performance makes it far more than another modern Ferrari collectible.
