5th Gen Honda Prelude:: Yay or Nay

  1. I have a 97 based model, auto(sucks), but I love the styling. The proportion is just perfect for a car with what may appear to be boxy. It's simple, but with eligance. Mine has leather seats, which makes it even better.

BTW my sister bought the car, then gave it to me after she was done with it.

IT didn't sell well, so Honda killed it for good. Having said that, do you like it, or do you think it was a waste of time?

Personally I think this car could have been better, especially it would have helped a lot more if it was made with hatchback. The trunk is really small, but with the seats folded I can fit my mt.bike and shut the lid. It handles pretty good, but turning radius is too big. The Vtec is awesome, but I don't really use it. I like the seats a lot, it's comfortable and hugs you well when you make quick turns.

If I were to be given a choice, I probably wouldn't have gotten this car, but it's just sexy to look at. So it's still a yay for me, but perhaps they could have done better with it.

  2. It was kind of expensive for the class it was in. MSRP started at somewhere just under 24K for the base model. It was outpowered by just as expensive Mustangs and Camaros. The looks I'm not a big fan of. I like the 4th gen a lot better. 5th gen looks like an aligator or something.

  3. I own one too, 1999 shape with the extra bhp that Honda added. I absolutely love it. Could of had some performance boost, I must say, but over all it holds well on the roads at speed. The boot is, as you say, somewhat small (esp when you have a custom install Alpine sound system <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>) so I put nothing in my boot, period. I hate the gay 5 spoke alloys that came with the car, hence why I have just dropped on a set of triple dipped luxury chrome 18inch alloys yesterday, and also had the car lowered in the process, so it wouldn't look rediculously stupid.

The turning radius does suck. Just coming out of my garage, the rear almost hits the fence, and the only reason it doesn't, is because I stop the car after just reversing back 2/3 of the way, and do a "3 point turning manouvre" to get out.

After driving mine today after the new wheels and suspension went in, there is absolutely/ barely any body roll in the car what so ever. Though, when factory fitted, there wasnt too much either.

I find with mine, with the tiptronic/sportronic 1st gear goes to about 45-50kms, 2nd gear can go to 120kms, 3rd gear is a major let down, absolutely piss weak 150kms, and at the 150km mark, your in 4th, on your way to 6500rpm [virtually redline, at just 190kms.]

Interior is somewhat weird I find. The seats are very comfortable, great for long lengths of driving, but the dash could of used some extra.... umph, more stylish in other words.

Over all, I can't complain, someone my age, in the country I'm in, I'm quite fortunate as most people my age are driving round in late 1980's, early 1990's shit boxes. I was lucky to pay
the price I paid for mine, some $3,000 under market value at the time when I purchased it 18 months ago. Just today, I was thinking, once my loan is paid off, what I would upgrade to.... After having a Honda, I was thinking S2K, Lotus Elise, E36 M3, or something else with 2 doors, and sporty performance.

    Well, thats my 2 cents. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

  4. I liked the looks of the last 2 generations of it though admittely the 2nd to last was a dog performance wise.

The problem with the Prelude was the price tag. When I was shopping around for cars I checked out a Prelude SH at the local Honda dealership. It had a $27,000 (USD) price tag. I just laughed. It was still sitting out there almost 2 years later.

  5. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th are all good looking in my book. BUT holy hell is there no rear seat room

  6. 1st 3rd and 4th are my favs.

  7. post pic of any 5th gen

  8. what do i like about it?

    styling: yes
    HP: yes
    "toys"(LSD, etc) Yes
    weight: No
    Performance: no
    new price: no

  9. they should've used that body for the integra or civic...and why did we get those stupid 4-eyed headlight integras anyway?

  10. Right now I can pickup a 2000 Type SH for $15,000 CAD. It is very tempting being if you get some sport springs, you have a car that could keep up with a porsche boxter on a mountian road.

Flat out the boxter would have a higher top speed, but not by that much.

  11. i like them as sporty daily drivers, but as spyder already mentioned they are way overpriced. my friend had a used 92sr(not srv) and another an srv and i enjoyed driving both, but the car is just a bit overpriced for the class it competes in.

  12. Horse power? Hmmm..... unless you drive a manual and keep your rpm above 4000, you aren't gonna get shit. The Vtec is pretty cool though.

    It's 195hp if you don't know already.

  13. yer, major lag until you get to about 3800-4000rpm.

  14. I drove one a few years back now and didn't like it too much at all. It didn't really do anything at all for me, and I'm not a huge fan of the looks. I definatly wouldn't swap my car for one.

  15. There are better cars out there that i like.

  16. tripled dipped luxury chrome 18's? you=moron.

    sorry.

if you had an SH, it had the terrible wheels. Personally i loved teh wheel that came standard on the final preludes... opinion i suppose.

I'd say that the fifth gen is an attractive car, but unless it has the high performance VTec engine (H22A, 195bhp) then it's really not that great, just another stylish coupe not worth the price of entry. fifth gen Prelude VTec's are nice cars, though. I really dig the digital dash, i'm not quite sure why they switched back to a dull traditional one in the final generation of 'lude. But, whatever.

Personally, I like the prelude as long as it's got the H22A under the hood... which means sixth gen or fifth gen VTec models.
