Israel army prepares for razing bulldozer attacker's house

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak ordered the army on Friday to prepare to raze the east Jerusalem house of a Palestinian whose rampage in a bulldozer killed three people, the ministry said.

Barak gave the order to "make the necessary preparations for the destruction of the terrorist's house," a ministry source said.

However, the source did not say whether a decision to carry out the demolition had actually been taken.

Bullodozer driver Hossam Dwayyat, 30, went on a rampage in Jerusalem's busy Jaffa Street on Wednesday. Smashing vehicles and overturning a bus with his machinery, he killed three people and injured 45 others before being shot dead.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert threatened harsh measures against Palestinians in the occupied eastern part of the city who carried out attacks against Israelis.

"If we need to destroy houses, we will destroy houses," Olmert said.

Israel Attorney General Menahem Mazuz said on Thursday that demolishing homes in east Jerusalem, which Israel annexed after capturing it in the 1967 Middle East war, "would not be illegal" but would carry unspecified problems.

Israeli politicians and media have characterised Dwayyat as a terrorist, but his family denies that he had any political ties and has suggested he had become mentally unbalanced when he carried out the attack.

Some 250,000 Palestinians live in east Jerusalem. While they are not Israeli citizens, they have Israel identity cards, have freedom of movement around the country and received social welfare benefits.

If he was shot dead, what's the point of razing his house?

  13. You mean in your country when Arabs commit crimes you don't bulldoze their family's houses? Strange.

  14. er, we should do that, but we'd probably get bad media for bulldozing 1.5 million people's homes

  15. and laugh.

  16. No, it just sounded lame.

  17. HughTewb isn't working for me right now, but I probably won't care.
