To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Pininfarina, Ferrari asked the legendary coachbuilder to produce a design for a roadster based on the 550 Maranello. The result is strictly limited run model which has been presold to Ferrari aficionados across the world. designed to recapture the spirit of classics like the daytona spider and the California series 250 GTs, the lengthily titled Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina is a dry weather toy for the seriously wealthy. There is a hood, but it's for emergency weather protection only; instead costumers will be able to shield their heads with the exclusive Bachetta open faced helmets that come with the car. No conventional beauty, the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina does have a menacing stance, with the lowered and strengthened windscreen and rather clumsy looking bars behind the driver and passenger providing rollover pretection. The powertrain remains unchanged, though with out the roof the full aural effect of the 12 cylinder is more accesible- which to many is worth the extra monet alone.
