    I agree - for an 80's 4-banger they were pretty fast. The styling totally sucked though. I don't remember exactly which year they did it, but they put the exact same style double wing on the hatch back as the Merkur XR4 - it looked good on the Merkur, but total poop on this thing.

    I remember the car mags drooling over this car when it first came out, then they test drove it....disappointment abounded for the price tag put on it. The sheet metal tank Z28 still spanked it and for less money.

    Actually, even after they drove it, Road and Track still loved it, so did a few others. The 4-cylinder turbo allowed good power (for the '80's) and clean emissions with good mileage. This machine was about efficiency and balance. It was faster than the early Mustang GT's (nearly as quick as contemporary '83-'86 0nes), and much better handling. Without all the iron from a big 5.0 up front, it had much better weight bias than a GT or Z/28. And, on the road course, the SVO spanked the GT and the Z/28. Handling & breaking were in 'Vette territory in those days (.93 on the skid pad).

    The real problem was that the kind of boy racer buyers that typically bought souped 'stangs often ragged the beasts. They soon learned what many owners of German & Japanese cars had already learned. If you don't properly maintain a turbo, it'll bite you in the ass.
    In short, this car was too sophisticated for it's target audience.

    It was a nice stab at a Mustang that was a true "road car" (though they pulled the same thing off in '93 with the Cobra, using the reliable V-8 that most 'stang fans are more comfortable with). Good braking, handling, and acceleration.
    In recent years, I've run across several that are regarded by their owners as collectibles and have been beautifully maintained. They all tell the same story. If you take care of the SVO, and keep it running right, it’s a helluva lot of fun to drive.
    I'd have taken one of these any day over those silly 2-liter Preludes, and other weak-suck sake-burners in the 80's that had the spoilers and neon paint jobs, but nothing under the hood to back it up.

    I personally like the styling, which was kind of "Euro" and under-stated. Of course, I also still like the much maligned 80's GT Mustang. I like the styling of the early GT's ('82) better than most of the later ones.
