2. Re: piece of........................

audi rules all. If they go on like this, they'll get kicked out of the le mans series, just liked the rally, and american Trans Am, and formula one many MANY years ago.

Don't dis Audi, they're literally one of the best car makers in the world.

Make that three years in a row!! i dont see how it can be anything less than a masterpiece if it has won 24 hours of Le Mans three years in a row! Audi certainly knows what they are doin here!! This is a great car! may not be the fastest but it does get the job done and ultimatly thats what matters.

It's absolute dominance can be compared to the Ford GT40s, Porsche 962s, and Porsche 917s. Every aspect of this car has been honed to absolute perfection; if there was a problem it was addressed and dealt with in the most speedy and intelligent way possible. It's speed is undeniable, especially since it has set the lap record at most, if not all, the tracks it has raced on. Of the 22 ALMS races it entered in the '00 and '01 seasons it won 17 times. The impact that this car has had on Le Mans Prototype design, race team management, and meticulous attention to detail is immeasurable. The R8 is still kicked by the GT-One and particularly by the 905LM which qualified at an average speed of 249kmh.

Pug won the 1993 FIA world sport protos championship , that is also a very good preparation.

The R8 in 2000 has done 92km less than the 905 did in 1993(5008 vs 5100).

The R8 isn't the ultimate car for LM , altough it's the fastest nowadays.

They have invented nothing with te R8.

It kicks ALMS because no other big car maker competes there (Porsche , Renault , Pug...).

Its design has no big improvement , the 905 Spider already had the same kind of looking in the mid 90's.

It's very far from what the C group cars were able to do.They could qualified at 250kmh average speed.

But you're right , the R8 is the best car nowadays.

Actually CorvettZO6 has it right. Although like you said, the R8 did not break any revolutionary ground(aside from that 5 min gearbox, which is really tricked), none of the car at Le Mans EVER has been so well prepared to win this race. The car can be driven, lap after lap, with the amazing consistancy, and reliability. Ever part of the car has been carefully thought through and prepared that the driver can just let it all go and not have to worry about a thing.

all i got to say is that CorvetteZO6 is ssoooo right!!! but i wouldnt mind it that they dominated in this fashion if someone besides their own teamates would give them a challenge in the races

The R8 did compete against the BMW V12 LMR which beat the Toyota GT-1 and Merc CLR in '99, and the R8 stomped it. So Audi did kind of vicariously beat the Toyota and Mercedes through the BMW's victory and Audi's subsequent triumph over the Bimmer. True the LMR wasn't really that much faster than the two closed-cockpit cars in '99, but it did out-last the toyota and the merc...well we all remember what happened there...So in my opinion it's safe to say that the Audi would have beaten those cars had they elected to continue competing in later years.

    Irrelevant.

Why did the GT-One loose in 1999 ? Boutsen was in front , a car hurt him.
The n°2 car was 7th at 3.30AM when De Cortanze ordered the hunt .Katayama and his co-drivers killed 11th times (!!) the lap record until 2PM.
The GT-One was only 20s behind the LMR and the LMR had to go to the pits...Then a rear tire of the GT-One exploded.

The CLR flew during the qulifications , and during the race , Mercedes retired the 3rd car.

The GT-One qualified faster than the R8 did in 2001.

  19. Re: piece of........................

    That's right.

IMO what also makes Audi so strong is the lack of others strong factory teams.

As a Le Mans fan(I know you are), you should know that there are much more to these car being good or bad than just their ultimate pace(speed, lap time). You can't win the race by having the fastest car along, you need a reliable car and easy to fix car as well. Never in the history of this 24 hour race has there been a team show up with a car that is so much better prepared than everyone else to win this race. Think about it, IF Toyota had a gearbox that can be changed in 5 minutes, we might be looking at a very different winner in 1998 since the 9th place finishing Katayama car went through like 3-4 gearboxes, each of them take 15-20 mins to change. That's an hour already wasted in the pit. Joest Audi anticipated all their problem BEFORE they even made it to the race. Their pitcrew practices these thing as their routine work. Look at 2001 race, when all the team were struck with all sorts of electrical problem because of the rain, only Joest Audi's 2 R8s sail through with no problem at all.

Another thing to look at how good the car is, is to see the team's other car compare to their winning car. In both 2000 and 2001, Joest's R8s all finished within 3 laps of each other(2000: 368, 367, 365 respectively. 2001: 321, 320 respectively). Which means ALL of their car are in such a condition to win the race itself, and ALL of their car are in the same level of quality. 1993's 905 EVO is like that, but 1992's 905 was not, when 2 of the 3 905 finished, and the 1st place car is 7 laps ahead of the 3rd place 905. The consistant performance amongst team cars with different groups driver is really a testiment to how good the R8 is prepared.

  24. It's a LeMans tradition. The final lap is primarily used for photo ops.
