3. Uhhm...
Back in 1994, when the McLaren was introduced, BMW's flagship was the 850CSi, the top of the line price was $104 500...

now, the McLaren F1 was priced at $1 million...
and the engine used such high tech components and materials (to save weight and keep the car from overheating they used thinkgs like 16lb of gold! and magnesium...) the engine itself was perhaps at least $150000.

so, where in the BMW line would you put such engine... ?? if it was more expensive that any car they sold back then.

  5. The didn't put it in the car cuz McLaren bot it from them and they can't make a car that can handle the engine.

Nope actually like I said they couldnt use an engine more expensive that any car in its line up back then

And besides, this was a specialy engine, unrelated to anything else to what's under the hood of any other BMW.

  9. Re: m3 rocks

over all i think the M3 is good fast and cheap for the performance it puts out. i heard rumors that there is a new V8 M3 out, that thing is gonna go.

  10. Actually, BMW were very close to returing to F1 with mclaren in 1990, but pulled out at the last minute. So, as the BMW board felt that they owed Gordon Murray (Mclaren F1 designer) et al a favour. Paul Roche (senior BMW motorsport director) decided to push the board into making the engine.

Honda, who were Mclaren's F1 engine supplier at the time wanted to develop the engine, but it had to be a 3.5 litre V8, which is not what Gordon Murrray wanted. So There you have it.

And anyway, BMW did decide to put it into one of their cars. The engine in the X5 Le Mans is just an evolution of the engine.

  11. Even though Gordon Murray asked for 550bhp, as a favour, BMW gave him 627bhp, although the engine weight exceeded the limit by a little bit

  12. If they put the new 500bhp v10 projected for the next m5 in a z8, reduce the weight to 3000 pounds, offer both coupe and convertible, tighten the chassis a tiny bit more, and give it the mclarens seating position, SLR will be very nervous

  13. pretty hard to lighten a 3500 lb car by 3000 lbs isnt it dumb ass

At least he can read, dumb ass! He said lighten it TO 3000lbs not BY 3000lbs. A little too quick to judge there, huh?

  15. McLaren F1 engines is definitely one of the best engine. McLaren chose BMW because they are capable, not for any other reason. I've read the official book of McLaren F1 and it is said when they developed the car, they want a supplier of engine (any manufacturer) which can supply at least 100hp/l from a NATURALLY-ASPIRATED engine. The answers are Ferrari, Honda, and BMW. They chose BMW later on and they never ever regret it.

  16. BMW should have made thier own Supercar like Mercedes-benz clk gtr but still I love mclaren f1 I dont really care where that egnine is.

  17. It was put into the McLaren because they wanted to show that there engines could produce real power... And BMW are very close to McLaren. And it would be a revolutionary engine in a revolutionary car.

  18. Mclaren's v12

can someone tell me why BMW would make such a great engine and then put it in the Mclaren and let them have all the fame??? anyone that knows cars would know that BMW is the best but for the few that say _________ is the best, that V12 would of been an amazing answer for them lol ya so anyways, can someone please tell me a good reason why they did that...

oh and for anyone wondering y i put this under the M3 e46.. its cuz thats my fav car lol

  19. Car companies usually make exclusive deals when making exotic engines and the sorts. BMW probably used their F1 team to design and build the engine for the mclaren. Why didn't they use it for themselves? Look at 2 things, the Price of a mclaren and the numbers of the Mclaren. It's very difficult to make an economical 600+ HP engine especially in mass. I wish they would have made a true BMW supercar, but I suspect something is on horizon now that Mercedes has their nose in with McLaren to build the SLR. Trust me, BMW is not one to be out done by Mercedes!

Actaully you put this in the correct forum. Because the M3 has something to do with the McLarens V12. The I6 the M3 is using is actaully one row of the V12 the McLaren uses, a little more developped of course. BMW is a good company because they use all their experince in motorsport and racing cars also in their stock models. This can be seen here. So if you own an M3, you can say that you have the half of the McLaren F1's engine under the hood, and even a little stronger than one half because the M3 has 343 hp and the McLaren has 627 hp, and 2 X 343 is 686. The extra power of the "half" is because the M3 engine is actaully a little bigger than just the half ( M3 3.2 l, McLaren 6 l ) but the point is that the M3's engine uses the same technolgy as the McLaren V12. I myself am a Mercedes fan and I really am looking forward for the new SLR, but I have to say the McLaren's V12 is one piece of art made by BMW.

  23. I've heard this said before... but I'm a bit skeptical. In any case, I think you have your hp figures a bit mixed up, because when bmw made the mclaren engine, they were producing the E36 M3, which put out 240 hp (american figures). If you put two of those together, you get 480, so if that's what they did, they had to do a bunch more tuning to get it to the level the Mclaren is at

  24. Perhaps he meant that the E46 M3 engine was patterned AFTER half of the McLaren F1 engine and not vice versa, but this is a good thread, and you've got those gears in your mind turning. Keep it up.)

  25. the only reason there is a bmw w12 in the mclaren is that gordon murray wanted one!
