Test drive crash = £300,000 insurance claim!

    Repairs to a supercar damaged when a test drive went wrong near Aberdeen are set to cost an insurance firm £300,000.

    The Pagani Zonda S, which would cost more than £500,000 to buy, was involved in a crash last September.

    The car has been sent for repair to Modena in Italy, where the vehicles are made.

    A spokesperson for insurers Aviva said: "This is the biggest insurance payout we have had for repairs to a private car in the UK."

    'Painstakingly constructed'

    The spokesperson said: "This is out of the ordinary for an insurer.

    "Although the vehicle was badly damaged, Aviva decided that the car may be repairable and set about making arrangements for the car to be shipped across to Modena, Italy, home of Pagani, the vehicle manufacturer.

    "There are roughly only 10 Zondas produced per year and they are painstakingly constructed."

    The insurance claim was lodged by the test driver, not the owner of the car.



    Further reports have revealed that it was Sir Jackey Stewart driving it! ouchie! lol

    Typically we don't report on the regularity of exotic supercar crashes. For one thing, they make us cringe. For another, there's unfortunately just too much of this going on, with Ferrari F430 Spiders and Lamborghini Gallardos seemingly crashed into telephone poles and roadside vegetation by every millionaire with more cash than driving skills. But once in a while a story comes along that – due to the profile of either car or driver – is just too notorious to pass up.

    Like this one, for example: Reports from the UK indicate that a Pagani Zonda S – presumably referring to the C12 S variant of 2000 or the C12 S 7.3 of 2002 – has been crashed near Aberdeen, Scotland. But that's not the end of it. Sources suggest that the man behind the wheel was none other than three-time Formula One world champion Sir Jackie Stewart.

    For his part, Sir Jackie's people refute the reports, but if they are indeed accurate, they could give new meaning to the legendary pilot's nickname "The Flying Scot". One way or another, the BBC reports that the vehicle in question is being sent back to the factory in Modena for repairs, which could cost as much as £300,000 ($450k).

  9. The most expensive crashes in history

    The news that insurance company Aviva is set to cough up a record £300k for repairs on a crashed Pagani Zonda got me thinking. Is this really “the most expensive crash in history” as the headline writers would have us believe?

    The Pagani in question was being driven by a colleague who was working for a rival magazine, and unfortunately for him the owner of the £528k Zonda was sitting in the passenger seat at the time. Ouch.

    Quite how such an experienced driver ended up parking a Pagani tail first into a telegraph pole nobody really knows (officer).

    But the resulting damage is, as stated, going to cost £300k to fix, and the good folks from Avia have agreed in kind to pay out.

    Surely, though, the bloke who once famously stuffed his Ferrari 250 GTO into the back of another car during an historic race caused more damage – both financially and emotionally – than our friend who will remain nameless in the Zonda? GTO’ go for anything up to £19 million, so the repair bill must have been several hundred miles north of £300k.

    Simialrly, at least two Veyrons are known to have been written off by their insurance companies while A N Other bloke once famously lunched his Jaguar XJ220 on a golf course.

    It’s reasonably well known, also, that a gentlemen called “Fat Steven” Eriksson pretty much destroyed his Enzo (circa £800k) when he allegedly crashed it at 196mph.

    And what about the time BMW’s ex-boss Bernard Fishtrousers (Bernd Pischetsrieder) rolled his McLaren F1 with not one but two members of his own family on board? Don’t reckon that cost less than £300k to sort.

    Neither would the repairs to the original 300 SL (approx £600k), which was thumped from behind and virtually destroyed not so long ago by a council truck owned by the state of Seattle.

    Heck, I nearly managed to put Autocar under myself once when I decided to drive over, rather than around, a roundabout in Wales in Tom Walkinshaw’s own private XJ220. Then again, perhaps the less said about that particular incident, the better.

  10. Lol at accusing Jackie Stewart of crashing the car, just because it's in Scotland.
    Did they forget that the reason he is famous is because he is a good driver, not a plodding journalist.
  11. he was pictured with the car and the owner at cadwell park and the picture was later removed after this story emerged. So why would you do that if you have nothing to hide? lol
