why do so many hate this car.........

  1. loads of people mock this car but i think this is the best car that america has ever built, its better than the corvette and the mustang and i would have it over most european cars

  2. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

    It handles like a van...

  3. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

I dont hate it. I think its quite good actually.

  4. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Okay, with 8 liters of displacement, Toyota or Honda could have built an engine that would put a car into orbit. There's nothing spectacular about making 460 HP from an 8-liter engine.

Spectacular would be making 800HP from a 2.6-liter engine.

  5. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

no, not really. a van handles like a van. This handles like a nice sportscar.

  6. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Well yeah, 800hp from 2.6 litres WOULD be impressive... if 50lb/ft of torque does it for you. In case you haven't noticed by now, Dodge is not trying to offer a street-legal race car, nor a 9 second drag car to customers. They are focused on RELIABILITY. How else could they offer a seven year warranty? Just because honda can build a whiny little 2L engine with 140 hp/L DOES NOT mean they could do it with an 8L engine. Not reliably, anyway.

Last I checked, the Hennesey Viper has around 800hp running low boost with the bottom end untouched. I think that shows the potential this engine has. If they wanted to, they could have turned the Viper engine into a 1500hp drag engine, but they don't want to.

First, lemme state that I don't like the viper. I think it's a poorly designed car, and it isn't up to par in the dynamic department with other cars in its class, even the vette. BUT when you start spending more that 40k for a car it is a matter of taste. I have respect for the viper because of what it can do. It is rediculously fast on the road and it has had tremendious success on the track. It is great in a straight line but lets face it, it can't hold a candle to a 911 turbo if things get wet. I for one like cars with smaller engines, like 3-4.5 liters, that can be reved more freely. Some people would rather have buttloads of torque. Either way is fine, they are both fun as hell

BTW, toyota and honda can build large engines, and do so with success, but they sell in asia and europe, and their taste and laws do not really permit cars like the viper in any significant number.

I'd save up some more cash and get a 360 modena, but that's my own opinion :D

  9. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

I have had to say this so many times... The Viper was originally made to be a dragster. And for a car that was made to go in a straight line to have that kind of handling, I think it's amazing. And most of the people who dislike the viper have never been in one and are basing what they say on stats alone. If you actually drive a viper and see that it can handle, you'll stop making those stupid remarks about how it can't. And the 800TT can burn nearly if not all supercars on this website.

  10. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Riiiiiite. Are you saying that Dodge never really wanted this car to go into production and they were just gonna make a drag car? Or are you saying this car makes up for in drag races what it loses in everythin else?

  11. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Maybe this will answer your skeptical question. The Viper was supposed to be a drag racing car when it was first produced. According to Daimler-Chrysler, the Viper was supposed to be a car that could go from 0 to 100 and back to 0 in under 15 seconds. But on January 4, 1989, at the North American International Auto Show, it was shown to test public reaction. And even before the show ended, orders for the viper began to flow so it went into production. So the idea for a dragster was gone.

  12. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

It was never supposed to be a dragster. It was intended to be a sports car, following in the tradition of the Shelby cobra.

0-100-0? Why would a dragster focus on a stat like that? dragsters don't need braking, that's what parachutes are for. For a road going dragster, they'd focus on (surprise, surprise) the quarter mile.

Carrol Shelby helped in the original design of the Viper, and Carrol doesn't design dragsters.

  13. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

i think that when he said dragster he meant straightline performance and not ACTUAL drag racing.

  14. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Thank you. Maybe I should have made it a little more clear.

    no problem. <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

  16. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Dude, this car would rape your van so hard, it's not even funny

  17. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

But, smaller liters give a car less horsepower. That's why Japanese cars are not very fast.

  18. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Actually, the Viper can handle. It has impressive slalom speeds of 65.7 MPH

  19. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Actually, the Viper has been turned into a 1500 HP+ monster, running turbos and NOS. It is the most powerful car in it's class...and the most successful!

    SVS1 is preparing a 1700hp Viper to be sold to the public<A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/emoticons.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="http://speed.supercars.net/cboardhtml/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>

  21. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

Now, imagine having one of those parked in the garage...
mind you, why cage the beast? I've seen some drag cars that are street legal. N E 1 know if this one is?

  22. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

I'm pretty sure it is, although none will probably ever see the street anyway. Much too fast and dangerous.

  23. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

What if it was the A-Team van?

  24. Re: why do so many hate this car.........

reality strikes another blow...but it's a great way to get into drag racing. Though personally, I like road racing - ALMS and FIA GT are my favourites. I'd love to see Oreca bring their Vipers back after they're done with the LMP, even though they sold their original Vipers off to fund their prototype program.

Jimmy Licks drove one of these off a cliff and apparently it went quite fast.
This is a shot from the kitchen of a Viper he modified in 1997.
Personally I would have used walnut or some other darker wood instead of the cherrywood.
