Due to pandemic related issues, Mercedes Benz will be closing down its production facility located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for good.
The factory in question is in charge of manufacturing C-Class and GLA crossover vehicles and currently employs 370 people. The factory churns out 20,000 vehicles annually, and Daimler plans to wind down production numbers to a full-stop.
Mercedes will still retain their Sao Bernardo do Campo plant where large industrial trucks are manufactured, but with the pandemic causing a major loss in Brazil’s sales for premium level models, there isn’t much hope for this facility to remain in business as their main focus at this plant is passenger cars.
“The economic situation in Brazil has been difficult for many years and was aggravated by the covid-19 pandemic, which caused a significant drop in premium car sales,” said J. Burzer, board member of Mercedes-Benz AG.
