Mecum Monterey (2015) – Auction Results

Lamborghini Miura P400 S sold for $2,300,000

The Mecum Monterey 2015 auction was held August 13-15 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel in Monterey, California, resulting in sales of $44,335,001. With 387 vehicles changing hands at the three-day sale, this year’s total was an increase of $10 million over last year.

โ€œThe level of quality offerings at the Daytime Auction continues to increase year after year, and 2015 was no exception,โ€ commented Dana Mecum, president and founder of Mecum Auctions. โ€œWith one of the deepest, most diverse dockets ever offered, the $10-million increase in sales is a testament to this trend, and we are looking forward to raising the bar once again in 2016.โ€

Top sales at the Mecum Monterey 2015 auction included a total of seven cars that sold for $1 million or higher. The event was headlined by the original 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S that well exceeded its pre-auction high estimate for $2,300,000 and the $2,250,000 paid for a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible, which served the duty of demonstrator for its designer John Herlitz when new.

The much-heralded 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera (Lot S71) originally special ordered by Steve McQueen was expected to break the one-million-dollar mark with its sale, and it did so with ease at almost twice that amount coming in at a strong $1,950,000.

The low-mileage Corvette collection hailing from the garages of Ed Foss did well with 21 of 26 hammering sold, topped by an unrestored 2,299-original-mile 1956 Convertible that demanded a high bid of $275,000. The group overall brought $2,563,500 in sales.

The Monterey Motorcycle segment also saw several notable prices achieved. A 1914 Flying Merkel V-Twin (Lot T135.1) became the auctionโ€™s highest-selling motorcycle at $175,000 with a 1925 BMW R32 (Lot T181) just behind it at $170,000. Other notable sales included a 1914 Indian Hendee Electric Start (Lot T50.1) that brought $97,500 and a 1959 BSA A10 Super Rocket (Lot T75.1) that brought $22,000.
