BMW M builds its one-millionth M car as electric M3 era approaches

A Fire Orange III BMW M3 marks a major production milestone for BMW M, while the Munich factory prepares to build the brand’s first all-electric M3 using Neue Klasse technology.

BMW M has reached a major milestone, producing its one-millionth BMW M vehicle. The landmark car is a BMW M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III, a striking special paint color that gives the occasion an appropriately bold send-off.

Built at BMW Group Plant Munich, the milestone vehicle was officially presented during a ceremony by Peter Weber, head of the Munich plant, to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH.

The achievement celebrates more than five decades of BMW M performance, a division that has built its reputation on combining racetrack-inspired engineering with everyday usability. It also comes as the brand prepares for one of the most significant transformations in its history: the arrival of fully electric M performance cars.

The BMW M3 marks a million-car milestone

Few models represent BMW M’s identity quite like the M3. Since its debut in the 1980s, the sports sedan has become one of the defining performance cars of its generation, balancing sharp handling and motorsport-inspired engineering with the practicality expected of a road car.

With production of the millionth M vehicle coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original M3’s market launch, the milestone highlights the enduring appeal of the formula that helped establish BMW M as a major name in the performance-car world.

“BMW M combines road and racetrack capabilities with everyday practicality,” says Franciscus van Meel. He added that the millionth vehicle demonstrates that customers continue to value these qualities, while reinforcing the company’s ambition to develop its performance lineup around BMW M Neue Klasse technology, including fully electric models.

The special Fire Orange III finish also makes the milestone car stand out from the production line, celebrating the occasion with a distinctive BMW Individual specification.

Munich will build the first all-electric BMW M3

While the millionth M car celebrates the division’s history, the Munich factory is already preparing for its next chapter. The site will become the exclusive production location for the upcoming fully electric BMW M3, which will be the first high-performance model to incorporate BMW M Neue Klasse technology.

The electric M3 will follow the fully electric BMW i3 as the second Neue Klasse model scheduled for production in Munich, placing the historic factory at the center of BMW’s next-generation vehicle strategy.

For the plant, the decision carries particular significance. Production of the current-generation BMW M3 began in Munich in 2020, creating a strong connection between the model and the factory’s workforce.

“The BMW M3 has close ties to the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich,” says Peter Weber. He emphasized that producing the first fully electric M3 at the same facility will allow the factory to continue shaping the future of an iconic performance model.

The move also reinforces BMW’s commitment to its historic manufacturing home, which has been building vehicles for more than a century.

BMW invests €650 million in an all-electric future

The transformation of Plant Munich extends well beyond the M3. Starting in 2027, the factory is scheduled to produce exclusively fully electric vehicles, marking a major shift for one of BMW’s most important manufacturing sites.

To support the transition, BMW has invested approximately €650 million in modernizing the facility while maintaining ongoing production. Around one-third of the plant’s total area has been redeveloped, including the construction of a new body shop and a modern vehicle assembly facility, alongside new logistics areas.

The updated production infrastructure combines advanced manufacturing processes, greater digitalization and closer cooperation between engineering teams, suppliers and factory operations. These changes are intended to support efficient production of the next generation of BMW vehicles, including the electric M3.

For BMW M, the transition represents more than a change in powertrain technology. The challenge will be to preserve the responsive handling, performance and everyday versatility that have defined its cars for decades while adapting those qualities to an electric platform.

A new chapter for BMW M

The production of the one-millionth BMW M vehicle offers a moment to celebrate the brand’s history, but the more significant story may be what comes next.

The upcoming electric M3 will bring BMW M’s performance philosophy into the Neue Klasse era, while Munich’s shift to all-electric production will reshape the factory that has helped build the brand’s legacy.

Whether the electric M3 can capture the same emotional appeal as its gasoline-powered predecessors remains to be seen. What is clear is that BMW is preparing to carry one of its most recognizable performance nameplates into a new era, with the same historic factory continuing to play a central role
