    What if Mazda would make a 7.6L Rotary engine! how many bhp it would generate? Think that.
    Why should car have big motor? if it burn rubber and goes way over legal speedlimit with smaler motor?
    I laugh when there is no oil to waste anymore and nations have to limit the oil usage and you americans can't anymore waste oil in your over big motors. HAHAHAA
    PS:eek:ne Liter fo gasoline costs about one american dollar in here so why don't you think again why we don't use those over sized cars!

    Just FYI for those interested... A press test drive can be found at http://www.rx-8.com/images/roadandtrack.pdf Notice the part at the end where the guy from mazda says that they plan on resolving the torque issues... Good stuff if you ask me.

    Well... that doesn't really apply to this argument.

    See, rotary engines are notoriously thirsty. The oil crisis in the 1970's (I think that's when it was, I'm only 21) helped delay the advancement of rotary engines.

    I'm not talking down rotaries, in fact, I'm a fan of rotaries because they're such a different approach, when everyone else uses the same concept<!-- Signature -->
     
  9. I dont think 17mpg is very good, but with a big american car that aint bad. The RX-8 is going to have better economy because of what they have done to it, about 30% better. Also since its N/A it deosnt need as much fuel.
     
  10. How the heck did fuel economy get into this? I dont care if your motor is big or small once you try to get alot of power out of the engine the mileage is going to suck! Stop bashing American V8's for mileage. I am sure if you look at any other hi performace car you will see they are not any better I don't care where it is made.

  12. I have been reading up on this car and I must say the engine is quite intriguing. It is reported to weigh 30% less then the 13Brew. Interior ports have been enlarged and relocated giving it much better fuel economy. It will be interesting to see when they turbo charge it. I also understand that the balance is incredible making it quicker then the RX7 on the track. It has a curb weight of 1250kg or 2750lbs. The weight is not excessive so with a good turbo package sub 5 second should be easily obtained. Still not a super car but great little daily driver.

    On a side note:
    This may also be the best new conversion motor available to date for small cars.

  14. since mazda has been using rotary engines for over 30 years and they are suppossedly so superior to piston engines, then why havent any other companies started using them? doesnt make much sense to me
     
  15. why would they make an engin they have no experience with. the rotary engine was origninally conceived to be a form of forced induction. it is superior because it has fewer parts therfore less friction = more power. its displacement is equal that of about 2 to 3 times of its actual displacement.
     
  16. Actaully, it has huge amounts of friction, due to the total amount of metal seals rubbing on the housings. Each rotor has 3 apex seals, the width of the rotor. Then there are 6 corner buttons pre rotor that rub on the housing. Then, depending on year of engine, there are either 6 or 12 side oil control seals per rotor. Of course, there are also the huge center bearings on both rotors and the huge bearing surfaces for the eccentric shaft.

    Each rotor has 3 combustion faces. The rotor spins at 1/3 "crank" speed, but with those 3 combustion faces, actually has a combustion event once per "crank" revolution, like a 2 stroke. This nakes it's actual working displacement twice it's rated displacement vs. a 4 stroke piston engine, putting the 13B at the equivalent working displacement as a 2.6 liter V6.<!-- Signature -->

    The reason for that is, because Michigan didn't support the rotary engine back then!
    That's why there are so few RX-7's in North America, while in Japan, they're everywhere. Also why no other companies moved towards the rotary engine. But hopefully things will change in the future!<!-- Signature -->

    Quite a few companies have used the rotary. NSU, Citroen, Suzuki, Moller, amongst others. GM had both a 2 rotor and 4 rotor engine under development at the time of the energy crisis.

    You have to remember, the rotary as we know it was patented by Wankel, and he only licenced it to a few companies.

    Oh, and it wasn't originally developed as a form of forced induction. Jeeze, where does this misinformation come from?<!-- Signature -->

    I am a great fan of cars, I own a 73 Camaro that makes 11.4sec
    passes in the 1/4 mile, but i got to say rotarys rule.
    I believe that most of you doesn't know where my country is but
    I'm sorry to tell you that here is were the sport compact drag racing
    was born. there are a lot of rotary powered old datsuns and toyotas that make 8secs. 1/4 mile passes. And we have the fastest drag car with a 13B engine using carburetors, the recrd is [email protected], and what I believe is the quickest rotary powered car, a car with a twin turbo 20B that resently ran a [email protected]

    I had a drive of a series 6 RX-7 a while back. 26B rotary (2.6 litres), 710hp, has flat torque 550Nm from 4000rpm to 9000rpm and redlines at 10000rpm
    ....naturally aspirated ... thats right, no turbo or NOS just 98 octane premium ...
    now, can you say PISTONS SUCK ?
     
  23. What, did you say. Screw rotary. You must be crazy. These people afraid to race my turbo 2 rx-7. My partna have a stock rx-7, and he tear up a 300zx. He give the 300zx, 2 from the back(that means, the zx start from 2 car lenghts behind of the rx). What happen? The rx-7 beat the 300zx by 6 car lenghts. Do you know what is 6 car lenghts. Imagine, rx engine way smaller than a 300zx. Shame. I does play with 300zx,mustangs, supra's, and probe. Because all of them slow. Only if i race on the high maybe the supra will win cause they are long distance cars. So never say screw rx-7, because they are the badest. if rx so shity then go race them, and see what will happen.

    You have one bit wrong, however. Piston engines (at least 4 stroke versions) make power every second stroke of the piston. Roataries make power every time the rotor face comes around.

    To compare displacements then, you either have to double the rotary displacement (it combusts every revolution) or halve the piston engine (which combusts every other revolution). Basically, at 3000 rpm, a single cylinder in a piston engine fires 1500 times a minute, while a singe combustion chamber of a rotary would fire 3000 times. A 13B (1300cc) rotary has the diplacement useage at any rpm that equates to a piston engine twice its size. TO compare power strokes, the 13B is the same as a 2.6 liter 6 cyl. (6 combustion faces). And it's pretty easy to get 250 hp from a 2.6 liter 6 cyl.

    About the 26B, that's the 4 rotor Le Mans engine. 700 hp in the Le Mans car. I've seen a few 4 rotor conversions from 13Bs, but nothing running near 700 hp yet in N/A form...especially not in street cars.<!-- Signature -->
     
  25. before i go off, i just have to say that i am probably the biggest fan of RX-7s and all other rotary powered cars, but i just dont think it is fair to compare theses 2 completely different engines on the basis of HP to litre, because we all know that rotary engines are measured all crazy like. So even though its fun to make rotary engines sound all pumped up, rotary engines take up just as much space as any piston engine in the engine bay, soo... say what you may
