Ultra-Rare 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss Offered at Auction

Number 15 of only 75 examples produced worldwide

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss represents the ultimate expression of the SLR partnership between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Conceived as a tribute to one of the greatest achievements in motorsport history, this roofless, windshield-free supercar was produced in just 75 examples, making it the rarest and arguably most collectible road-going derivative of the SLR family. Now, the 15th example is set to cross the block at Broad Arrow Auctions’ upcoming Zurich sale on November 7, carrying an estimate of up to $3,636,000.

Unveiled in 2009, the Stirling Moss was designed to capture the spirit of the legendary 1955 Mille Miglia victory achieved by Stirling Moss and navigator Denis Jenkinson. Driving a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, the pair completed the thousand-mile Italian endurance race in 10 hours, 7 minutes, and 48 seconds, averaging an extraordinary 157 km/h. The achievement remains one of the defining moments in Mercedes-Benz competition history and provided the inspiration for this uncompromising special edition.

Unlike conventional SLR models, the Stirling Moss dispenses with a roof, windshield, and side windows, delivering an unusually direct connection between driver, machine, and environment. Its sculpted carbon-fiber bodywork incorporates a long hood, prominent side vents, aerodynamic underbody, and large rear diffuser. An automatically deploying rear airbrake and carbon-ceramic braking system provide additional stability and stopping performance at speed.

Power comes from a hand-built 5.4-liter AMG supercharged V8 producing 641 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain enables acceleration from 0–62 mph in less than 3.5 seconds and a top speed exceeding 217 mph. Extensive carbon-fiber construction also reduces weight by approximately 200 kilograms compared with the SLR 722 S Roadster.

This particular example was originally delivered to the Netherlands in November 2009 and remains with its original owner. Finished in Crystal Laurit Silver Metallic, it features a distinctive Black and Red 300 SL Silver Arrow leather interior, with both body-contoured seats specified in the smaller size. The cabin combines exposed carbon fiber, brushed metal, and minimalist instrumentation, while Stirling Moss’s signature is engraved into the polished aluminum center console.

Its history extends beyond private ownership. The car participated in the Mille Miglia in 2012, 2015, and 2021, including the 60th-anniversary celebration of Moss and Jenkinson’s historic 1955 victory. With just 13,410 kilometers recorded at cataloging and a recent service completed in preparation for the sale, it presents an unusually compelling combination of provenance, originality, and historical significance.

As one of only 75 examples ever produced, this SLR McLaren Stirling Moss offers collectors an opportunity to acquire one of the most distinctive modern Mercedes-Benz performance cars, created to celebrate a racing achievement unlikely ever to be replicated.
