In 1936 Lagonda, under the direction of W.O. Bentley, prepared four factory race cars for the semi-official Fox & Nicholls team. These would promote the LG45 chassis which brought Lagonda into the luxury car market.

In September 1936, Lagonda anounced the LG45 Rapide as the fastest car in the world. It used the engineering found on the LG45R race cars, but with pleasant and stylish touring body that became the quintessential Britsh prewar car. .
