Sony Making All PS3s Backwards Compatible?
Patent filing for new cell-based emulation engine suggests that all PS3s could become backwards compatible via firmware update.
by Scott Lowe

US, June 30, 2009 - In an effort to reduce PlayStation 3 production costs, Sony removed the console's Emotion Engine; the chipset which enables the system to play PlayStation 2 software. At first the company left the chipset in a few of its console SKUs, but has since discontinued all hardware variations with the capacity for backward compatibility. While certainly a smart business decision from a logistical standpoint, the move to remove the console's ability to play last generation titles left gamers with substantial PS2 game libraries out in the cold, but a recent patent filing by the company suggests that the feature could be making a comeback.

According to a report by Siliconera, Sony recently filed a patent for a new cell-based emotion engine emulator, which could be capable of processing PS2 code through the PS3's existing processors. The processes were loosely outlined in the patent filing, but in essence, Sony is developing a way to translate and store Emotion Engine processing data within the PS3. In other words, this means that Sony could theoretically bring backwards compatibility to all current and previous PS3 units with a simple firmware update, regardless of hardware configuration. The filing makes no specific mention of the technology's intended purpose or when or if it will be implemented in a PS3 update, however, it seems pretty safe to assume that Sony will eventually bring it to console. After all, a firmware-enabled emulator is an extremely cost effective way to add an invaluable feature to the device without major hardware revisions.

Last.fm on XBL

Microsoft announced at their E3 keynote last month that Last.fm would be coming to Xbox Live. We're working on an interview with key players at both Last.fm and Microsoft to bring you more details about the collaboration soon. However, we can share one tidbit: today we spoke with Christina DeRosa, a general manager for XBL, and she let us know who the service will be available to.

"Silver users will be able access what we're considering a trial period of three hours a month, which comes with video advertising. Gold users will have unlimited ad-supported access, so they can use it 24 hours a day. There will also be a premium offering on a subscription basis from Last.fm, that will be commercial free and will also have more sophisticated personalization features, like Loved Tracks."

Last.fm's subscription prices are currently $3.00 US (€3 EU or £3 GBP) per month, so you'll have to shell out an additional $36 a year if you want to avoid the ads and have full access to their service. You'll also need a Last.fm account, in case you haven't set one up already. Luckily, that part is free.

So after finishinhg off Dreamfall, im ecstatic that the game is getting continuation, especially after its ending.

however according to wiki production hasnt even started as of feb 09! so here I was so excited (game reference) that this game came out in 06 and the sequel should be arriving soon. now however the blasted game is still a few years away.

19. Game Thread XXXIII -- E3 Extravaganza!!

Dude all PS3s playing PS2 games really isn't a big deal at this point, maybe when it was new. How many times have you played a PS2 game on a PS3 or even a PS1 game on PS2? I have only done it a few times and just to see it upscaled and looking better.

I really doubt many people care, especially with tons of PS3 games coming out now. It's not like early 2007 when the system was new and there was a gaming drought.

I was playing Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory the other day, I need to check out something in GT4 fairly soon (the layout of the Seattle course), and I have Ico sitting next to my PS3 because I only just got it from my friend. So I use BC fairly often.

But I do get what you're saying. I'm just hoping they put a bunch of PS2 games on PSN.
