Porsche Unveils 911 GT3 R Race Car

Automaker makes official announcement just one day before 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps debut

Latest 911 Variant Sets New Standard for 992 Customer Racers

Porsche have just unveiled its latest customer racing carโ€”the Porsche 911 GT3 Rโ€”which will debut at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps race on July 30, 2022. The latest GT3 R continues its race car bloodline into the current 992-generation, where it will again sit above the GT3 Cup in terms of performance (and also price).

It also becomes the gold standard for factory 911 race cars, with the now-retired Porsche 911 RSR not yet having a successor waiting in the wings. Homologated for competition in the GT3 class, the new GT3 R will be raced in series such as IMSA, WEC and eventually the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Like in previous iterations, the GT3 R improves upon the GT3 Cup in every imaginable way. This includes what you’d typically expect, with more aerodynamics, an improved suspension geometry, fatter tires, optimized electronic aidsโ€”and not least of all, more powerโ€”responsible for the overall transformation.

GT3 RS Clues & Insights

Speaking of power, Porsche have thrown a bit of an Easter egg our way with a simple photoโ€”along with verbal confirmationโ€”indicating the new GT3 R will come equipped with a high-revving 4.2L flat-6 engine which produces 565 hp. Historically, we’ve come to understand that the GT3 Cup is a derivative of the road-going GT3, while the GT3 R is strongly linked to the GT3 RS.

The timing of all these announcementsโ€”with the new 992 GT3 RS due for its world premiere in just over 2 weeksโ€”is certainly of no coincidence. The notion that we’ll see an engine exceeding 4.0L for the first time in a 911 production car, since being introduced in the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 is not just possible; it’s downright probable.
