1934 ‘Old Grey Mare’
Built by owner and race driver John. C Reuter, this was one of the few pre-war American road racing specials. Reputably built with components of 19 other manufacturers, ‘Old Grey Mare’ is a great mix of different cars. It was raced with success from 1935 to 1940 and is best know for it's victories at ‘Climb the Clouds’
‘Climb the Clouds’ was a popular hillclimb on Mount Washington's roads in New Hampshire. These is the highest peak in the North East and ‘Old Grey Mare’ won the event outright in 1935, 1936 and 1938. The best time in 1936 was 12:45.6 until driver Lem Ladd beat the record by 28 seconds.
The car was also raced in various events before retiring in 1954, winning at ‘Round the Houses’ at Alexandra bay and the GP of Montuak in New York. The car also won the ARCA award in 1939.
‘Old Grey Mare’ has since been restored and it returned to the centennial celebration for ‘Climb the Clouds’ as well as the 2005 Monterey Historic Races as a centerpiece of their Great American Specials display.
