Four iconic Volkswagen Group V10s battle through drag races and braking tests

Matt Watson and his team carwow brought together four very different interpretations of Volkswagen Group V10 performance for a multi-stage showdown featuring an Audi R8 V10, Lamborghini Huracán Performante, Lamborghini Gallardo Performante, and a heavily tuned Audi RS6 V10. Rather than relying solely on a standing quarter-mile, the test expands into rolling races and a high-speed braking challenge, putting their drivetrains, transmissions, power delivery, and chassis technology under scrutiny.

The Audi R8 V10 represents the modern supercar formula in relatively understated form. Its naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 produces 550 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque, with power delivered to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission equipped with launch control. At approximately 1.6 tonnes, it is not the lightest contender, but its sophisticated transmission and quattro traction give it a strong technical foundation.

Facing it is the 2018 Lamborghini Huracán Performante, which uses an upgraded 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 developing 640hp and 600 Nm. At roughly 1,500 kg, the Performante combines substantially greater output with a significant weight advantage. Its lightweight construction and track-focused engineering make it a formidable benchmark for the other three cars.

The Gallardo Performante takes the formula back a generation. Its 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 delivers 570 horsepower and 540 Nm, while its approximately 1.5-tonne curb weight keeps it competitive on paper. However, its robotized manual E-gear transmission represents a very different approach to power delivery compared with the newer dual-clutch systems.

Then comes the wildcard: a second-generation Audi RS6 fitted with a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V10. Originally producing 580 horsepower and 650 Nm, this particular estate has been tuned to approximately 780 horsepower and 1,300 Nm. It also uses a six-speed torque-converter automatic and quattro all-wheel drive, although its roughly two-tonne mass presents an obvious disadvantage.

With naturally aspirated supercars facing a massively boosted estate, the test becomes a fascinating examination of power-to-weight ratio, traction, transmission response, and launch characteristics. The cars go through multiple configurations, including standing starts, rolling acceleration, and braking from 100 mph.
