I've seen that car personally once:
It belongs to the Sultan of Brunei's second wife.
She's Malaysian so she has a few BRUNEI plated cars in Malaysia.
iirc we've gone over the S73 allready, but I can't find any info in my txt files. II can't say out of the top of my head if there are two cars or if they;'re one and the same.

because i read an article written by domingos piedade, the boss of amg, who knows the sultan personaly and he said that he had a fall out with his brother, got into financial problems and locked up the collection and didnt buy any cars.
also of interest he said the back in 2002 he gave a 1:5 scale model of a dtm clk to the sultan´s nephew for his birthday, and he asked if amg could built him a real one, but with radio an air-con etc..

I have several good arguments for the Enzo and MC12; one of them are the registration numbers.
This thread isn't necessarily about the Sultan's cars, but about the entire Royal collection. I've put the Sultan in the title of this thread, because it's easier to find by people who are searching search engines.
And yes, those cars are new.

The day after I posted the last update about the CLK GTR's I got my hands on a new photoshoot. Beside the fantastic shots of the Roadster's exterior, we can also have a look at what's under the engine cover and finally there is a good picture of the centre console plaque, confirming it to be the second Roadster made.

Aston Martin AM3 - 4 pictures
First up today is the red 1997 Aston Martin AM3 during it's roofscene at Pininfarina. This was the first time Pininfarina worked on an Aston. Seeing the number of great coachbuilt cars from Pininfarina and Works Service in the nineties, it was only a matter of time before the special request for a collaboration between Works Service and Pininfarina came in from Brunei.
WS supplied the Vantage chassis with the V600 (600 BHP and over 800 NM!) supercharged 5.3 litre V8, bigger brakes and suspension. It's interesting to note that these engines were developed especially for these one-off's; it wasn't untill 1998 that these engines were offered as an upgrade for regular clients.
The rolling chassis went to Italy, where Pininfarina was responsible for the bodywork and the bespoke interiors. The build of the AM3's, or at least the first concept/mockup, was done by Coggiola.
Beside the good looking lines (both inside and out), the first thing that stands out are the black parts on the car. The AM3's body is made out of aluminum, but the front of the nose and the rear are covered with carbon fibre parts. The black part at the front, especially on the red car, looks a bit odd. Perhaps that's why this part is removable; I wonder how it looks without it. I do like the effect it gives at the rear of the car. And the fact that it's formed like the well known Aston Martin grill is a cool detail as well <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>. The lights aren't completely hidden behind this black part of the car, like we've seen on a few Bentley's, but get drawn to the background a bit.
This is one of three cars made in 1996 and 1997. There is this red/red one, a black AM3 with spectacular mirror tinted windows and a third that was converted from a V8 Vantage mule.

Aston Martin Special Series II - 8 pictures
Three Aston Martin Vantage Special Series II were designed and made by Aston Martin's Special Project Team in 1998. I think (not 100% sure) these cars had the following chassisnumbers: #70508, #70509 and #70510.
The Series II had the potent 600 BHP engine, wich could get the car up to 190 MPH (in theory 205 MPH was possible).
And then the design: I think they look brilliant <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/grin.gif"></A>! These cars are from a bygone era. The way Works Service is structured now, this will never happen again. Wich is a little sad, because the craftsmanship in that department was of the very highest standard. At least I can find a little comfort in the thought that the car from the pics has been on the road in the recent months <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/smile.gif"></A>.
Aston Martin Lagonda Vignale - 5 pictures
In 1992 Aston Martin Lagonda commissioned the Lagonda Vignale concept to be build by Ghia of Turin. Both of these companies were allready acquired by Ford at that time. Allthough Ghia operated very indepently from Ford. Ford/AML wanted to know if there was a market for a 250k (in 1993) super limousine. An extra model in the AML line-up could provide a serious number of extra clients and thus boost the revenue. A motive that was really important in the early nineties.
Because of the backing of the big Ford family, possibilities for this concept were almost limitless. The design of this car was made by Moray Callum (brother of Ian Callum - designer of the DB7). And what a job he did! <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/cool.gif"></A> Especially when you compare Moray's design to that of the seventies/eighties Lagonda, it's really clear that this is a timeless design. It still looks great today and with some minor adjustments I think it could be sold today <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/grin.gif"></A> Anyway, back to 1993.
The mechanics were borrowed from the new Lincoln Town Car. It was based on the Town Car chassis and had a 190 bhp 4.6 litre V8. The plans for future production cars was different though: the chassis would have become an extruded aluminium affair, the suspension was to be fully independent and the engine would have been a 6.0 litre V12. Exactly the same features that can be found in the Project Vantage and V12 Vanquish.
This first blue conceptcar was presented at the 1993 Geneva Auto Salon. I'm not exactly sure when, but some time later a second Vignale concept was made. This second (grey) car was used amongst other things for press photo's and was eventually destroyed, because it wasn't fully engineered. The blue Vignale was sold at the famous auction of Ford prototypes in Dearborn in June 2002 for a massive $403,500 (including buyers premium), many times above the estimate of $60,000 to $120,000.
Anyway, the Vignale story has a tail. In 1995 another one was made. AML wanted to see how a production Vignale would look like. This third car was designed by Ghia and made at AML's Works Service at the Newport Pagnell factory.
Painted in the complementing burgundy red colour, DP2138 was different from the concepts. Whereas the concepts were quite huge, this was a little smaller. I haven't found out on what Ford chassis it is based. But while comparing the pictures of DP2138 and the grey concept, the most notable differences are at the front of the car: the headlights, foglights, front air dam and wheels (awesome wheels btw!) were altered for the better. It also received some practical changes, like sidemirrors, windscreen wipers and an antenna. The interior was changed as well. While retaining the a number of the art-deco details, a centre console was fitted as well as an altered dashboard. I personally like some of the changes, like the centre console, but I wish more of the concept's details were kept. It didn't go into production, but still, there are some awesome treasures in that concept interior.
What happened under the skin of DP2138 is hard to tell from the pictures. I can tell that it's based on a Ford chassis. It isn't powered by the Lincoln V8, but by a V12. I wonder if this is the same V12 that was proposed in 1993 as the engine that would power the Aston Martin's in the new millenium. By 1996, Ford had fitted a working experimental 6.0 litre V12, initially based on a pair of 3.0 litre Duratec V6 units, to a show car they called the Ford Indigo Concept. A further development from this V12 finally appeared in an Aston Martin with the fully road going 1998 Project Vantage. The new V12 was finally installed into a production Aston Martin with the DB7 Vantage in 1999.
Eventually it was decided not to take the Lagonda Vignale in production. A decission I don't fully understand. I've read various sources saying that the Lagonda marque wasn't well known enough. If I look at all the Lagonda saloons I like them all and I'd say there is a little place for them on the market. But who am I? <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> I understand that a new model is a very risky endeavour. Aston Martin allready had it's DB7 to worry about, a car that would mean alot more to the company's future.
This third car, the only production Vignale ever, ended up in Brunei. It's now residing in a collection amongst it's peers.
This is everything I can tell you about this stunning car. Especially this part of the update took me a long time to write, but I enjoyed it alot. This is the way I really learn about these cars.
The production Version of the Vignale is such a spectularly good looking car, overall I like it a little bit more than the concepts. It's such a shame that it never hit the real production stage, so I might had a change at seeing it in real life <A BORDER="0" HREF="http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?displayFAQ=y"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="pitlane/emoticons/wink.gif"></A> Just like the Bugatti EB218 (and 112 & 118). I guess that the Lagonda marque wasn't known enough and it took up too many resources and it was too big of a risk. Instead they had the all new Aston Martin DB7. Right car at the wrong time...
