Gordon Murray Automotive: The Visionary Brand Redefining Supercars
Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) is a British car brand that stands at the forefront of automotive innovation, founded by one of the most legendary and influential car designers in modern history, Gordon Murray. Renowned for his pioneering designs in Formula One and iconic road cars like the McLaren F1, Murray launched GMA with a mission to create supercars that focus on lightweight construction, driver engagement, and engineering precision. This post explores the founding of GMA, its history, the groundbreaking car models it has produced, and the milestones that have shaped the brand's journey.
The Founding: A Vision of Engineering Perfection
Gordon Murray Automotive was founded in 2017 by Professor Gordon Murray, a South African-born British designer with decades of experience in both Formula One and road car design. Before founding GMA, Murray had already cemented his place in automotive history, having designed some of the most successful Formula One cars for Brabham and McLaren, as well as the iconic McLaren F1 supercar.
Murray’s decision to start GMA stemmed from his desire to bring his philosophy of lightweight engineering, driver-focused design, and groundbreaking aerodynamics to a new generation of supercars. GMA was founded under the umbrella of Gordon Murray Design, a company he established in 2007 to focus on automotive and engineering consultancy. GMA’s goal was clear from the outset: to create the world’s most driver-focused, technologically advanced, and lightweight supercars.
The Evolution of Gordon Murray Automotive: A Legacy of Innovation
Although Gordon Murray Automotive is still a relatively young company, its impact on the supercar world has already been profound. The brand’s focus on lightweight construction, revolutionary aerodynamics, and an obsessive attention to detail has resulted in some of the most exciting cars in recent years.
The T.50: Redefining the Supercar (2020)
GMA’s first major project, the Gordon Murray T.50, was unveiled in 2020 to global acclaim. The T.50 was designed to be the ultimate driver’s car, carrying forward the ethos that Murray established with the McLaren F1. One of the standout features of the T.50 is its lightweight construction, with a curb weight of just 986 kg, making it one of the lightest supercars ever produced.
The car is powered by a bespoke 3.9-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine developed by Cosworth, producing 654 horsepower and revving to an astonishing 12,100 rpm, making it the highest-revving road-legal V12 engine in history. The T.50’s engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, further emphasizing the car’s focus on driver engagement.
One of the most innovative features of the T.50 is its ground-effect fan system, a nod to the Brabham BT46B "Fan Car" that Murray designed for Formula One in 1978. This fan system actively manages the car’s aerodynamics, allowing for unparalleled downforce and cornering ability without the need for large wings or spoilers.
The T.50s Niki Lauda: A Track-Focused Masterpiece (2021)
In 2021, GMA followed up the success of the T.50 with the introduction of the T.50s Niki Lauda, a track-focused version of the road car named in honor of three-time Formula One World Champion Niki Lauda. The T.50s is even more extreme than its road-going counterpart, with a reduced weight of just 852 kg and a more powerful version of the V12 engine, producing 725 horsepower.
The T.50s Niki Lauda is designed exclusively for the track, with a massive rear wing, front splitter, and a roof-mounted air intake to improve aerodynamics. The car’s ground-effect fan system has been optimized for track use, providing incredible levels of downforce that allow it to corner at mind-bending speeds.
Only 25 units of the T.50s Niki Lauda will be produced, making it one of the rarest and most exclusive track cars ever built.
The T.33: The Everyday Supercar (2022)
In early 2022, GMA introduced the Gordon Murray T.33, a more accessible and road-focused supercar aimed at delivering the same level of driver engagement and engineering excellence as the T.50 but in a slightly more practical package. The T.33 retains the lightweight construction and naturally aspirated V12 engine but offers a more refined and comfortable driving experience for everyday use.
The T.33 is built on a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and features advanced aerodynamics, though without the extreme fan-based ground-effect system found in the T.50. It is designed to be the ultimate grand tourer for enthusiasts who appreciate both performance and practicality. With production limited to just 100 units, the T.33 continues GMA’s focus on exclusivity and bespoke engineering.

Did You Know
Gordon Murray designed championship-winning cars for Brabham and McLaren, including the McLaren MP4/4, which won 15 out of 16 races in 1988, driven by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.
The T.50’s 3.9-liter V12 engine, developed by Cosworth, revs up to 12,100 rpm, making it the highest-revving naturally aspirated V12 engine in a road-legal car. It’s built for those who love the sound and thrill of a high-revving engine. GMA is producing only 100 units of the T.50, making it an extremely rare and exclusive car. Each unit is meticulously hand-built, ensuring the highest level of craftsmanship.
The track-only version of the T.50, the T.50s Niki Lauda, weighs just 852 kg, which is even lighter than the road-going T.50. It’s designed exclusively for the track and is named after the legendary Formula One driver Niki Lauda.
