The first true musclecar I think would be the Chrysler 300 - the first ever HEMI.

awesomeawesome car, though, muscle car it is not. the GTO was the first, but the 1955 chevy, and its revolutionary 262 small block are what truly shaped the muscle car era.

IMHO it was a combo of the late 40's and early 50's oldsmobiles, tri-5 chevys and the '57 chrysler 300-c that were really the first muscle cars...but if you dig back, you could argue that the good ol' flathead v8 fords were the first...point is, yo could really argue that anything started it

Just for the record, what we classify as muscle cars are your average family car with big powerful engines. The GTO, Chevelle, you name it, they were just family cars, with powerful engines. This Cadi, though powerful, isn't a family car.

Cadillacs had a reputation for having tremendous power. They were fast for their day, with excellent hill climbing ability, and contrary to popular belief, even possessed good roadability.
But a muscle car it is not. It's not affordable enough, nor was the overall emphasis on speed. Speed was just one component of many that made this car special.
