Please add to the list if you have additional info.

R26B 4 Rotor
700 PS/9,000 rpm
62kg-m/6,500 rpb

Features:
Intake (TIMS)
Peripheral port. An intake system that features stepless, linear control of the intake flow throughout the engine RPM range. It includes a funnel that slides up & down on a conventional slide-valve type fuel injection manifold. The funnel is stretched long at low RPM and is shortened at high RPM to maintain flat torque characteristics. The 175mm funnel in it's 175mm stroke by a motor through a wire responding to varying engine RPM.

Here is a article I have on the Mazda 787B.

I have a larger one in PDF format.

Mazda Wins 59th Le Mans, 1991

The Mazda 787B won overall the 59th 24 Hours of Le Mans (24 Heures du Mans) on June 22-23, 1991, at the Sarthe circuit, Le Mans, France. Mazda is the only Japanese winner of the race, and the only winner with a rotary engine. The winners (Johnny Herbert, Bertrand Gachot, and Volker Weidler) drove 362 laps and 4923.2 km (3059.1 miles), 27.2 km ahead of the second place car. The average speed was 205.3 kph. They lead from lap 320 to the end (the last three hours).

In 1990, FISA decided that starting in 1992 no RCE engines would be allowed, though this has been relaxed since then.

The R 26B engine that won was normally aspirated and had four rotors and three sequential spark plugs per rotor. The capacity is 2622 cc actual, rated by FIA formula at 4708 cc. It produced 700 bhp at 9000 rpm and 62 mkg torque at 6500 rpm (448 lb-ft). Fuel was electronically injected and consumption was 51.881 liters per 100 km at an average speed of 213.58 kph (excluding pit stops). The air intakes had continuously variable geometry controlled by the engine electronics. The transmission had 5 speeds (full synchromesh) from a Porsche design gearbox and a limited slip differential.

The Mazda 787B car weighed 830 kg (1831 lb). The chassis was designed by Nigel Stroud and the body was carbon fibre. Wheelbase was 2.66 m by 1.53/1.50 m and overall size 4.78 by 1.99 m. It had 18 in wheels, ventilated carbon fibre brakes. Tires were Dunlop 300-640x18 front and 355-710x18 rear.

Mazda May Return to Le Mans with Rotaries
Mazda hints at rotary's return

June 24, 1999 United Kingdom Autosport Magazine

Mazda has intimated it may return to motor racing with a rotary engine early in the next millennium. The managing director of the Mazda Motor Corporation in Japan, Martin Leach, said a comeback in sportscars centred on Le Mans was most likely, but touring car racing had not been ruled out.

"It's something I'd like to see," said Leach, who emphasised that the Mazda board had yet to give the green light for a return. "I get one vote, but lots of others have to agree as well. Any project would involve a rotary engine; it's part of our brand DNA," said Briton Leach, who drove the 1991 Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend. [A correspondent to this web site writes that actually it was driven by another driver on the track in the afternoon.]

The timing of any new venture is unclear, but a return to the track is not expected before 2001. However, a new rotary-engined road-going sports car - to be unveiled at the Tokyo motor show in October - suggests that an early return is likely.

Mazda has a long heritage in sportscar racing, especially at Le Mans. Its last full-house factory assault was in '92, but the Mazdaspeed competition department was represented at the race between '94 and '97. (Transcribed by a correspondent to the June 24 RX-7 mailing list.)

Le Mans 2000, 1999 and 1998
There appear to be no rotary engine cars entered in the 2000 Le Mans as of April 29th.

There were no rotary engine cars in the 1999 Le Mans.

Mazda declines to enter a revamped 1991 Le Mans winning 787B race car in the 1998 24 Heures du Mans. Finance and the change of company president are cited as the reasons.

There were changes to the rules for variable length intake manifolds for rotary powered vehicles.

Downing's MadaSpeed 97 Completes 1997 Le Mans
The Team DTR car placed 17th completing 263 laps and had the 11th fastest lap of those finishing. It was driven by Yojiro Terada (Japan), Jim Downing (USA), and Franck Freon (France) in the Prototype category (LMP875). The car was a four-rotor and drove on Goodyear tires.

Downing's MazdaSpeed Kudzu Completes 1996 Le Mans
Downing's MazdaSpeed Kudzu Mazda was one of the specifically invited teams. They placed 25th in the race, June 16, 1996. The drivers were Terada, Downing, and Freon. The car was halted for five hours in a pit stop at the 13th hour (the results indicate "refuelling", but that doesn't make sense). Nonetheless, this finish enabled them to win the LMP2 class. The car was a three-rotor.

The 1974 Sigma MC74 with Mazda 12A engine was the first Japanese team ever to finish with the chequered flag.

Mazda is the most reliable finisher: 67 % of the times it has entered (31 cars)), the highest reliability of any maker, except Honda, who entered only one year (3 cars) and all 3 finished. The next closest was D.B. (?) (France) at 55 %.

I've never heard of a turbocharged rotary engine. I'm not sure if it's even possible... Can any rotary gurus explain why or why not?

Personally, I think it would just hurt the overall performance of the car with turbo lag, and there would also be the issue of decreased reliability (unacceptable in a car designed to run 24hr endurance races).
